O’Donnellan & Joyce launches auction season to packed house

They came from far and near to the Victoria Hotel last Friday where O’Donnellan & Joyce held its first spring auction after the winter recess. In a sense it was like the good old times of packed auction rooms, the only difference being that the prices achieved were somewhat lower than of old. However the owners of all three properties had set the advised minimum values very realistically which goes to prove that if the price is right the property will sell. In these times of doom and gloom there was a real air of euphoria in the room, and the final hammer came down on two of the three properties that were sold at the auction to applause from the packed room.

Tanks or no tanks, the Volvo Ocean Race village is going ahead

Preparations for the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Galway and the erection of the race village at the docks will go ahead regardless of whether the giant oil tanks are removed or not.

Nothing more symbolised the relationship between the Irish Catholic Church and the GAA than the formalities in the lead up to an All Ireland final in Croke Park. To the musical accompaniment of the Artane Boys band, there was the parade of the players, then a rousing version of the national anthem, followed by Faith of our Fathers, and then the sight of a bishop throwing in the ball to begin the game.

My neighbour offered me some of his new potatoes last week, and as there was a distinct lack of tasty goodies in the Shaw household for dinner that day I picked up the garden fork and filled a pot with freshly dug spuds. I was not sure of the varieties but after 15 minutes steaming I saw that they were all beautiful floury types, with their jackets bursting open.

New health centre opens on Inis Oirr
